COLONEL FOOTBALL ENJOYS STELLAR SIGNING DAY
Thibodaux, La. – Nicholls State University received National Letters of Intent from 28 high school and junior college players on Wednesday’s National Signing Day. The group joins two mid-year signees who are already on campus and will participate in spring drills.
Included in the group of mid-year signees is an offensive and defensive lineman. The Colonels took the opportunity to upgrade several positions on the field during their recruiting efforts. They include defensive back, fullback, defensive end, linebacker, running back, defensive line, offensive line and quarterback. Nicholls State added six offensive linemen, four defensive backs, defensive linemen, linebackers and defensive ends, three fullbacks and running backs and two quarterbacks.
Wednesday’s list of signees contains 23 high school players and only five junior college transfers.
“We are very excited to have so many newcomers be part of the Nicholls State Colonel family,” Colonel head coach Daryl Daye said. “I’m tremendously proud of our coaches, team and administration for all their hard work leading up to this day. I think this will be a very productive class.”
The Colonels signed 15 players from Louisiana, six from Mississippi, five from Texas and four from Florida. Locally, Nicholls State inked defensive back Aaron Harris from South Terrebonne High School and fullback Byron Winslow from H.L. Bourgeois.
“Our plan is always to work from within and split out from there,” Daye said. “Louisiana was very good to us this year. We had a tremendous amount of players in the state that decided to come to Nicholls.”
After playing for a share of the Southland Conference Championship in their final game of the season, the Colonels, who finished their 2003 campaign at 5-6, will begin spring drills in early March with the annual Spring Game tentatively scheduled for early April on the Bayou Bermuda of Guidry Stadium.
